“Get played, get heard, get seen, get noticed. Get rich, get paid, get fucked, get screwed out of royalties.”
If you’re a muso, you’re probably not going to want to miss Front. This latest show from JackRabbit Theatre, whose previous works have been loud, creative, fast and entertaining, is guaranteed to follow the rhythm.
Front is a new play by Michael Abercromby. Via members of the band Rough Cut Punt, it gives audiences a glimpse into the otherwise unseen drama of rehearsal rooms, recording studios and green rooms. In the same way that theatregoers get immense pleasure and satisfaction from seeing a play about theatre (eg. Noises Off) musicians here will feel those same pangs of joy from seeing their way of life played out in front of them.
But let’s be real. It wouldn’t be any fun if they weren’t making fun of themselves. This production is a very clever, very witty examination of the perils of today’s Music industry. Intertwining hilarious songs with symphony of colourful characters and painfully real scenarios, it’s bound to give anyone even remotely involved in the industry a sense of schadenfreude.
Written by musicians for musicians, Front very cleverly holds the mirror up to those who are intoxicated by the promise of fortune, desperate for their 15 minutes of fame and don’t care how they get them. These guys know what they’re talking about because they’ve lived it, and they have no qualms telling their story and laughing at themselves along the way.
